​Defining a project begins with the team reaching an agreement on the scope, goals, financial and performance targets for the project. In lean Project selection is chosen by the sponsor or team then a project charter is drafted. Validation of the scope of the project occurs. The voice of the customer is defined and a review takes place. The key steps in the define process are: 1. Reviewing the project charter; 2. Validate the problem statement and the goals, 3. Validate the financial benefits; 4. create a process map and to verify the scope of what is to be done; 5. A communication plan is created; 6. Project plans to include schedule, budget and milestones are made; 7. Finally move on to the next step which is measure.
