Respiratory

Serious disturbances in oxygenation and ventilation are both life-threatening and among the most common indications for ICU admission or prolonged ICU stay. Mechanical support, provided by invasive or noninvasive means, is common to all ICUs. Among the pertinent areas for research and clinical trials are the ongoing investigation into the optimal use of ventilatory devices, the means and processes of weaning from mechanical support, an understanding of how to best manage diseases such as adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or respiratory failure, and the prevention of respiratory infections.  This section will help educate the critical care provider about these important areas of support and care for our critically ill and injured patients.
