Fundamentals RICU-PICU Programs
Learn ICU
Welcome to Learn ICU!

The Society of Critical Care Medicine continuously reviews and evaluates the effectiveness and delivery methods of its quality education activities. Changes in healthcare education are driving how healthcare professionals continue their lifelong learning within their discipline.  The focus of education is not only on how to deliver excellent patient care but also on how to improve that care.  New and innovative tools and programs are required to assist critical care practitioners with their learning needs.  While traditional programs still can provide the requisite information, changes in individual time, costs, and requirements for demonstrating continuous quality improvement have compelled the Society to adapt adult learning principles to meet these changing needs.

The Society continues to secure the highest quality care for all critically ill and injured patients.  This is reflected in the Society’s mission of providing the highest quality education information, by committing to:

  • Providing the finest education for healthcare professionals, the public, and policymakers regarding optimal delivery of critical care
  • Promoting and supporting quality research in critical care
  • Advancing evidence-based practice and outcomes measurement to improve the delivery of critical care
  • Promoting continuous quality improvement in all critical care-related endeavors

The LearnICU Web page is designed to organize learning opportunities systematically into categories that are easily accessible to members on the SCCM Web site.  Information for critical care healthcare providers (members and nonmembers) and for the general public (families and patients) is provided.

For a better understanding of LearnICU, this Web page is organized into four areas based on competencies expected of all healthcare professionals:

Clinical Practice:  Utilizing the theory, physiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and application of practice principles to improve patient care.

Quality/Safety/Practice-Based Learning:  Defining, investigating, and evaluating patient care practices by appraising, assimilating, and applying scientific evidence to enhance care delivery.

Administration/Systems-Based Practice: Demonstrating knowledge of and responsiveness to the larger context and systems of healthcare, and exercising the ability to call on system resources effectively to provide optimal care.

Professionalism: Committing to teamwork, adhering to ethical principles and practices,  demonstrating sensitivity to diverse patient populations and end-of-life care, and taking personal responsibility for professional growth and development to enhance patient care.

As you navigate through the LearnICU Web pages, you will see how the topics are organized.  Topics in healthcare are fluid and can fit into multiple categories.  You may find appropriate materials in many areas, which you can navigate easily via  the provided links.  Use these to explore the materials and have fun with learning.
